Elbrus is catalogued as a composite volcano, commonly called a stratovolcano. Such a label describes a volcanic construction built through repeated eruptions; it does not by itself date every rock or predict future behaviour. The Smithsonian profile lists dacite, andesite/basaltic andesite, rhyolite, and trachyte/trachydacite among the mountain’s major rock types.[1]
Regional research places young silicic magmatism at Elbrus within the broader tectonic history of the Greater Caucasus.[2] This is an active field of interpretation using geochronology, geochemistry and modelling. A concise reference should preserve that distinction: a rock is observed, while an explanation of its origin is a tested scientific model.
