Names of Mount Elbrus

Elbrus has names in several linguistic and cultural traditions. A name can be a living local form, a historical spelling, a translation, or an etymological hypothesis. These categories should not be collapsed.

Encyclopaedia Iranica discusses the name Alborz and notes that the Caucasian volcanic peak is also called Elbrus through a sound metathesis; it also makes clear that the history of the name is a scholarly question, not a settled folk gloss.[1] Research on “Şat” examines a historical name associated with Elbrus in literary and regional sources.[2]

This page therefore records names as attributed forms and avoids selecting one origin story as fact. A future language-by-language register should cite its exact source and spelling. Historical sources covers how such records are evaluated.
