Historical sources on Elbrus

Historical sources differ in proximity and purpose. A contemporary letter may record what an observer believed or saw; a printed map represents the knowledge and conventions of its edition; a later narrative may synthesise earlier sources. None should be relabelled as a direct witness without checking its provenance.

The Lenz publication in the University of Tartu repository is an example of a digitised early source that can be cited by stable catalogue link.[1] A fuller source register should add edition, language, repository, page range, transcription status and the precise claim supported.

This approach is particularly important for apparently simple statements about dates, participants and summits. See The 1829 expedition and Historical maps.
