Mount Elbrus is a large glaciated stratovolcano in the Caucasus. The Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program lists it as a composite volcano and distinguishes the western and eastern summit cones. Its profile lists 5,642 m for the western summit and 5,621 m for the eastern one.[1] Those are catalogue values, not a substitute for saying which summit, datum and survey a later map uses.
The mountain is also a research landscape. Glaciological studies use dated satellite, terrain and field observations to describe glacier change; ice-core work investigates atmospheric and climate signals preserved in high-elevation snow and ice. The volcanic record is similarly evidence-led. The GVP’s eruption catalogue records a Holocene episode with a stated uncertainty and tephrochronological evidence.[2] It is not a prediction of present activity.
