The glaciers and snowfields of Elbrus are part of the headwater landscape of the central Caucasus. Descriptions of rivers emerging from the mountain are often simplified in popular accounts, but hydrological relationships depend on named tributaries, confluences, season and map scale.
The value of a reference treatment is to trace a claim to a dated map or hydrological source rather than turning “source of a river” into a slogan. Glacier studies establish that ice cover and volume have changed over defined periods; they do not by themselves establish a present discharge or water condition.[1]
This page deliberately makes no statement about current water level, crossing, drinking-water quality or route conditions. Glaciers and Maps and geodata provide the source framework.
