Elbrus, Europe and Asia

Mount Elbrus lies in the Caucasus. Calling it a continental high point requires an additional decision: where the boundary between Europe and Asia is drawn. Different atlases, institutions and traditions have used different Caucasus boundary conventions.

This is not a disagreement about the mountain’s physical height. It is a difference between a measured landform and a regional classification. A responsible statement therefore names the convention it follows, rather than presenting a continental superlative as if it were a purely geological fact.

The Smithsonian profile is useful for the mountain’s volcano identity and summit values, but it is not a ruling on continental boundaries.[1] For measurement, see Elevation and measurement; for physical setting, see Geography.
