Ice-core isotope values are often discussed as climate evidence, but the relationship is not automatic. Snowfall timing, wind redistribution, accumulation and atmospheric circulation can alter the signal stored in a layer.
A 2026 study of an Elbrus Western Plateau core reports that the isotope–temperature relationship is non-stationary and cannot be represented by one calibration for the entire record.[1] That is a valuable lesson for reference writing: a core is an archive, but interpretation needs its method and limits. Earlier work also describes the mountain as a site for physical and chemical ice studies.[2]
